DSL Troubleshooting tips

Recent problems with the reallymusicradio broadcast stream have provided some useful information about getting the most from your DSL broadband connection. First of all, since competition is so strong among broadband providers these days, it appears that they'll likely bend over backwards to try and keep you satisfied. Secondly, you can use this list of potential sources of bad performance when you talk to your DSL tech support people:

1) Is there a "bridge tap" on the line? This is a junction that may be connecting your line to other places that can suck off the signal.

2) Are there "load coils" on the line between you and the Central Office? Apparently, these are items that can cause noise on the line that fights with what you really want to have there.

3) Are there any "bad grounds" anywhere in the line path? These can have a similar effect as load coils.

4) How's the phone wiring at your place? The reallymusicradio ranch is an older structure and has lots of shorts in the wiring which causes signal drop. If you are in a similar situation, it may result in your DSL modem losing its connection. Qwest hooked up a line from the box outside the house straight to the DSL modem which bypassed all of the in-house wiring and your provider can do the same for you if need be.

5) How far is your connection from the Central Office? DSL can only work properly within a certain range and in some cases the provider may engage in a little wishful thinking in order to get your business. Also, what THEY think is an acceptable level of service might be different than yours. Usually, their position is that as long as you're connected and can get email, you're good to go. Unfortunately, you'll need a little higher level of performance than that to get listenable music streams like reallymusicradio.

Hopefully this helps improve your service...if you have any additions or corrections. please feel free to send them along.
