REALLYMUSICRADIO presents
Kinnie Starr
In 1991 - Kinnie begins teaching herself guitar...years earlier, she had fallen in love with her brother's drum kit. She begins writing songs
and her writing quickly begins leaning hard on the poetry and hip-hop side. she is also traveling a lot, skipping from east to west coast, as she still loves to do. in nyc, she has been rhyming to a friend en route to a club in the east village. the mic opens up and her friend volunteers starr. petrified and having never been on stage alone, starr approaches the mic, closes her eyes and begins in a whisper. by her third encore, the exclusively black audience is providing such a substantial impromptu backbeat of in-house djembe drumming, stomping and hand-clapping that for the first time starr comes face to face with her ability: she has the power of word, groove, she can rhyme, and her presence is "edgy ...[and] enchanting" (the new yorker) enough that she can entrance a room full of strangers.
SUN AGAIN, Starr's third cd and first all-english album, bounces and head nods thru the sunny terrain of catchy, succinct pop braced by a deep love of hip-hop, r&b, and the narrative geniuses of Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper and Lauren Hill. Starr, "who could get by on her lips and hair alone" (Paper Magazine, usa) is also blessed by brains, spirited blood, and an ever-widening crew of collaborators. joining her on the production end is her mentor and drummer, John Raham, as well as guest producers Glen Reely and DJ Murge of Battleaxe Records and Swollen Members. Starr is also experimenting more with musical co-writes, welcoming the chops of Rob Chursinoff, Moka Only, and Spek.
