While sitting in a Nashville restaurant on the first bitterly cold day of the year, soon after the mastering of her third album, Airstreams and Satellites, Mississippi native Garrison Starr suddenly hits upon a revelation that surprises even her.
"There's really not anybody doing what I'm doing." What might sound like an egotistical boast coming from almost anyone else in her position, is simply a pure statement of fact coming from Starr. No one is doing what Garrison Starr is doing right now. There are no solo female rock artists storming the charts these days. No modern Chrissie Hynde's to compete with Britney's baleful bunch. There is a massive hole in the middle of America's musical map, and its shaped like a girl with a guitar. "There's a definite hole to be filled right now for women in rock. I think what I do is pretty original considering all the manufactured artists floating around out there. The day of true rock songwriters seems to be waning, and it makes me sad. I hate the fact that everybody has to be put in a specific category to sell records and get the public's attention these days. Just rock on and get over it already. Let's go." It's a sad realization, like finding out that all of a sudden, chocolate has disappeared off the face of the earth, but it's a situation that has a remedy, Airstreams and Satellites. "All three of my records really define three very specific phases in my life," Starr explains. "From being angry (18 Over Me) to being contemplative and having some perspective (Songs From Takeoff to Landing) to now sharing that perspective and being able to be more vulnerable in my songwriting. Airstreams and Satellites is the culmination of a lifetime of writing and recording and touring and wandering. While Starr has undoubtedly marked significant sign posts in her musical career with her previous two albums, it's with Airstreams and Satellites that she has officially arrived. |
