KATE MARKOWITZ
A second-generation native of Los Angeles, Kate Markowitz has performed as a back-up vocalist all over the world, with James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, k.d.lang, and others. She's recorded and performed with James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, k.d. lang. She's also recdorded with artists including Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Graham Nash, and Warren Zevon, just to name a few. Though she's continued to work as a back-up vocalist, Kate's always been a songwriter, both on her own and also collaborating with local L.A. writers. In the early '90s, she had a platinum selling #1 single in Germany, a song she recorded after touring in France. Inspired by her successful European solo single, shooting a video in Jamaica, and about to sign a deal with WEA Records in Germany, Kate was discouraged by the extreme push for commercial and non-personal music from her record company. She ended up not signing the deal and has been on her own ever since, continuing to make her living singing back-up and living the secret life of a closet songwriter.
In 2001 Kate opened for and sang back-up for Shawn Colvin in Los Angeles, ending a promotional tour for the release of Shawn's CD, Whole New You. Kate released her debut CD, Map of the World in 2003 on Compass Records. Her own music has been influenced by all the artists she's worked with, by the Brazilian music her father played around the house, and by everyone from the Beatles, Joni Mitchell, and Billie Holiday to Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, No Doubt and Pink. She lives with a dog, a cat and her fiance near the beach in Los Angeles, trying not to spend too much time in her car.
